Domestic Violence

Everyone has arguments and everyone disagrees with their partners, family members and others close to them from time to time.

Everyone has arguments and everyone disagrees with their partners, family members and others close to them from time to time.  We all do things at times which cause unhappiness to those we care about and of course we regret.  When this begins to form a consistent pattern, then it may be an indication of domestic violence

Any incident of threatening behaviour, violence or abuse, psychological, physical, sexual, financial or emotional between adults who are, or have been, intimate partners or family members, regardless of gender or sexuality, is very often considered domestic abuse.

Domestic abuse can take place in a range of contexts in which the relationship is characterised by power and control.

Research studies that considered alcohols contribution in partner abuse have shown that alcohol use consistently emerged as a risk factor.  It does not show that alcohol use definitely causes domestic violence.

Who it affects

Children are the silent witnesses to domestic abuse. Apart from the risk of physical harm, witnessing domestic abuse can have a severe impact on behaviour, emotional development, health and education performance. There is also a longer term impact through adolescence and adulthood, including the ability to create and maintain healthy relationships; low self esteem and emotional instability.

Individuals or families who are struggling with domestic abuse difficulties can use counselling as a way to recognise how familiar patterns of relating may need to change.

Stress anxiety and depression picture
