Stress, Anxiety and Depression

Diagnosable depressive illnesses usually require medical investigation and it is always advisable in the first instance to talk with your GP. Many people understand the value of counselling support when they are feeling depressed, stressed and anxious.

Diagnosable depressive illnesses usually require medical investigation and it is always advisable in the first instance to talk with your GP. Many people understand the value of counselling support when they are feeling depressed, stressed and anxious. Feelings of depression usually, but not always, stem from a build up of stress and anxiety.

Stress and anxiety by and large, involves too much: too many pressures that demand too much of you physically and psychologically. Stressed people can still imagine though, that if they can just get everything under control, they'll feel better. Stress can develop as a response to any situation or thought that upsets you.

Anxiety is a feeling of apprehension or fear. Stress can vary day to day from person to person. What's stressful to one person is not necessarily stressful to another and what bothers you today may not be as upsetting tomorrow. The same goes for anxiety: that is, it's not always possible to determine the cause of anxiety or reaction to it.

If constant stress or anxiety has you feeling physically, mentally, and emotionally exhausted, you may be suffering from burnout and it is important to seek support or advice.

When you're burned out problems seem insurmountable, everything looks bleak and it's difficult to muster up the energy to care let alone do something about your situation. This in turn can lead to feelings of depression and anxiety and can even lead to panic attacks for some people.Stress anxiety and depression picture

The counselling space can often help to clarify the difference between feelings of stress, anxiety and depression.  It can provide a starting point to make changes that feel more manageable.

Improving personal lifestyle choices will help maintain a balanced work and home life, so that stress is kept to a minimum and workload is managed and reduced. Correcting diet and paying careful attention to nutrition and exercise will help reduce addictive behaviour and negative habits that feed on stress. Making time to relax away from the work environment will greatly improve mood, general wellbeing and help to reduce stress.

Building resilience by learning to focus on smaller tasks that require care and attention will enable an individual to become absorbed and relaxed so that performance pressure is reduced. By setting positive supportive goals burnout can be avoided or healed.
